Our Wood

Reclaimed Oak and Chestnut

Reclaimed oak and chestnut are the only timbers we work in, and both are hardwoods. We salvage them from historic buildings across Anatolia and the Balkans, and beyond. Then we make each piece to order in our own workshop, with the original weathered surface kept as it is.

This page sets out the species, the surfaces and the flooring options, so an interior designer or a UK buyer can specify with confidence. Samples are available on our building materials, and you can order online.

Why We Work in Oak and Chestnut

We name the species, because it matters. Oak and chestnut are both durable hardwoods, with tight grain and real density. Many sellers list only "reclaimed wood" and hide the species, which is often a softwood such as pine. We do not. So when you specify reclaimed oak and chestnut, you know exactly what goes into the room.

For the wider comparison, read our guides to hardwood vs softwood and oak vs chestnut.

From Salvage to Finish

Every board starts in an old building. We dismantle and clean each piece by hand, and we take out the old nails. Then we work it to size in our own workshop. We keep the original surface, rather than sanding it back to look new. So the grain, the colour and the marks of age stay with the timber, and each piece keeps its character.

The Character of Reclaimed Oak and Chestnut

Reclaimed timber is not uniform, and that is the point. You will see knots, splits, old fixing holes and shifts in colour from board to board. Some boards carry a deep patina. Others show saw marks or filled cracks. For an interior designer, this is the look that new timber cannot copy. We can guide you on how much variation to expect for a given surface.

Surfaces and Finishes

You can choose between two face structures. The Patina Original Surface keeps the weathered face untouched, with all its age and texture. The Sanded or Brushed surface gives a cleaner, more even face, while it still shows the grain. From there, the surface treatment sets the final look.

  • Repaired, cracked or raw, for the most original feel
  • Varnished, for a sealed finish on solid boards
  • Filled, raw or oiled, on sanded surfaces

Reclaimed Oak and Chestnut Flooring

We supply reclaimed oak and chestnut flooring as solid or engineered boards. Solid boards suit most rooms. Engineered boards are built in two layers, so they are more stable and they work over underfloor heating. Both come as planks or in pattern, and both glue down. Popular patterns include plank in random lengths, herringbone, chevron at 45 or 60 degrees, and marquetry panels.

Certification and Sustainability

Reclaimed wood gives old timber a second life, so less new hardwood is felled. Our oak and chestnut carry FSC Recycled 100% and PEFC certification, and we plant one tree for every order. The boards are durable, and a reclaimed floor or table can last for many years. So it is a sound choice for a project that needs to last.

Samples and Made to Order

Samples are available on our building materials, so you can see and feel the timber before you commit. When you are ready, we make each order to the size you need, and we dispatch in 4 to 6 weeks. We include free UK delivery across the UK.
